Major causes of vehicle collisions are excessive speed, disregarding traffic control signals and general carelessness. The traffic division strives to reduce these collisions through selective enforcement in our residential, school and commercial zones. The traffic division also works very closely with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Motor of Vehicles and routinely participates in vehicle safety checkpoints within the town of Manchester.
The traffic division is also responsible for monthly DWI checkpoints. These checkpoints have proved to be an invaluable tool for the detection and arrest of drivers who are under the influence of drugs and or alcohol. These checkpoints have also netted the division numerous wanted persons, illegal aliens and arrests for other criminal offenses. The Manchester Police Department has received several awards from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers for our continued commitment to remove these drivers from our roadways. The Manchester Police Department is proud that we have been the leading municipal police department within the State of Connecticut for drunk driving arrests.
The traffic division also utilizes a large number of citizen volunteers who assist with speed enforcement by deploying the traffic division’s three-speed detection trailers.
Once a problem area is identified with the speed trailer, a member of the division will target the area with strict enforcement.
