The Manchester Police Department is dedicated to providing the public with critical information pertaining to the safety of child passenger. Our department has several certified child passenger safety seat technicians who are available, by appointment, to inspect the installation of child safety seats and teach parents how to properly install them. EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 1, 2005

Infants must remain rear-facing until they are BOTH 20 pounds and at least one year old.

 

Toddlers must be in a car seat.

 

Children must be in a booster seat (or car seat with harness straps weighted for children over 60 pounts) until the children are BOTH more than 6 years of age and over 60 pounds. Children who ride in a booster seat must use a lap and shoulder belt.

LAWS

Children, tweens and teens must be in a seat belt wherever they ride in the vehicle. Seatbelts are mandatory, even in the back seat, until after the age of 16.

Further Safety Recommendations:

Keep infants rear-facing until they meet the maximum height or weight requirements of the car seat when it is rear-facing and they are at least one year old and 20 pounds.

 

Children should remain in a car seat until they are 40 pounds rather than a booster seat.

 

In addition to the 6 years/60 pounds requirement by law, children should remain in a booster seat until they are at least 4’9”.

 

Children should ride in the back seat until they are 13 years old. All people and objects should be properly restrained wherever they are in the vehicle.

 

Kids are not cargo! Never allow children to ride in the back of a pick-up truck.
